The Art of War And Small Talk
By Mr. S.
Small talk is an art in and of itself. It requires the speaker to access an interaction on the fly, gauge the willingness of those around and engage accordingly.
Read the Room
Life is full of various situations which might require a person to partake in small talk. Each event may be underscored by the emotions of that moment, maybe it is a funeral shrouded by pain or a sporting event punctuated by excitement and comradery. Read the room. Understanding the situation before speaking is important. All conversations require substance.
You don't need to say much to say a lot
Think of idioms, deep meaning can be found by uttering only a few words. Small talk shouldn’t be drawn out or descend into a lecture. Aim to keep their attention. These maxims have only touched the surface and a more in depth analysis is needed to suss out the finer details of small talk.
Have you ever paid for a meal you didn’t think was worth it? A bad conversation is just like that. A bad meal without substance. Substance, what's in the sauce? Between the buns? Cooking in the soup? A conversation can be just as savory* as a meal so try to make every word count.
*savory (adj.)
Small Talk Is A Part of People's Routine (in the US) (在美國)閒聊有如家常飯
Think about the various situations you find yourself in throughout the day. Like most people, we have routines. There is nothing wrong with that so make no mistake in thinking that life is just an endless cycle of monotonous routine. Small talk is just a part of it.
Most people go to the same shops every day. These are prime times where small talk could be initiated. Think about it before you engage. Where are you going today? Who will you see? Is it the same cook at the breakfast store or vendors at the market? A simple, “I think it’s going to be a really nice day today. What do you think?”, can signal a positive outlook on the day. “Your scallions are so rich in flavor. I’ve been using them in everything lately.” can break the ice, too.
The Art of Small Talk
Think about one of the greatest works of strategy, The Art of War by Sun Tzu. “Opportunities are multiplied as they are seized.” That is a concise yet deep sentence. There is a lot to unpack*. This maxim, brought to us by a 6th century general, provides value not only on the battlefield but in engaging in the art of small talk. Prepare yourself before a conversation like you would for a war with full armor. Think of each sentence as a way to seize another opportunity while constructing a conversation. Only fight the battles where you will win. Only initiate talks where you are ready.
*There is a lot to unpack.
