Digital Nomadism
What is a digital nomad? Why is it a trend and why are some people quitting it?
Doesn’t it sound like a dream? Working remotely while trotting globally, making new friends and meeting exciting culture. But what are the pros and cons?

What is a digital nomad?
Digital nomads are different kinds of workers. Some are freelancers (or a Slashie as they call it in Taiwan), some are entrepreneurs and others are on a full-time payroll1 with a remote working position.
One of my favorite references of digital nomadism comes from Urban Dictionary, “One who derives income remotely and online, rather than from commuting to an office. This enables the digital nomad to not need a permanent home base, and she/he can travel anywhere at any time. Often find them couchsurfing2, living in hostels, with friends, or in third world countries where rent is cheap.” What caught my eye is the last emphasis on “third-world countries”.
What are the upsides and downsides?
The pros of digital nomadism speak for itself3 - exciting jet set lifestyle4, no geographic constraints and all the glamor that comes with traveling itself. Sipping on a tropical punch while tapping away on the computer. But it’s not all roses5.
Being constantly on the move takes a toll on6 one’s mental physical health. Internet anxiety is one. Food safety and healthcare is another factor. This also explains why digital nomads tend to be younger folks who are relatively healthy. Some express difficulty in making long-term relationships.
Whether you decide to try it out or not, it may be smart to suss out7 the pros and cons and be prepared for them.
